SPE President Leo Roodhart Visits PDPU
On Feb 5, 2009, the president of SPE Dr. Leo
Roodhart, visited Pandit Deendayal Petroleum
University on the invitation of Student Chapter
of SPE at PDPU. SPE(Society of Petroleum Engineers)
is a professional association which represents
petroleum engineers and other professionals
working in energy resources development and
production.
Accompanying Dr. Roodhart, were distinguished
guests from SPE India section and senior officials
of IRS, Ahmedabad as well as ONGC, Shell, Schlumberger
to name a few among other reputed companies
of oil and gas sector. Shri M. Y. Farooqui,
GM (P & D) – GSPC, Shri PPG Sarma,
CEO – GSPC Gas, Shri S. M. Sinha, Productions
Head – GSPC, Shri Arijeet Ray, Dr. Bijoy

who visited the university.
Dr. Leo Roodhart is 2009 SPE President and
is currently leading Shell’s corporate
strategic innovation program, GameChanger. During
his speech he mentioned the widespread problem
of recession and said, “The current global
financial crisis is affecting economies around
the world and has slowed demand for energy.
But I have seen many crises affecting our industry
during my career, and in the long term, the
world will always need energy. It always amazes
me how much energy there is in a gallon of gasoline.
Nothing can and will beat that.”

Chairman, GSPC and Chief Secretary, GOG, Shri
D.Rajgopalan visited the university on March
21, 2009. In an interactive session between
Shri Rajgopalan and the stakeholders of the
university, Deputy Registrar Mr. Palak Sheth
made a brief presentation on the inception and
progress of the university. The Director General
Shri. Virani informed the Chief Secretary about
the vision of the university and the future
plans.
Student representatives from the Management
School and the School of Petroleum Technology
gave a short introduction of various extra-curricular
activities organized at the university. Students
expressed the hope that in the coming years
the university would carry on its progress to
become at par with world-class universities
like Texas and Stanford.
Shri Ragopalan in his speech expressed pleasure
and satisfaction at the way the university is
shaping up. He implored the stakeholders of
the university to consider establishment challenges
as constructive opportunities. He also insisted
that students should be involved at all stages
in the developmental plans of the university.
Since the area near the university is fast developing
in an educational zone, he advised the officials
of the university to explore the possibility
of creating homogenous residential facility
for the students of different institutes, so
that maximum academic interaction among students
of different discipline becomes possible. After
his speech, Shri Rajgopalan also took time to
interact with students and to answer their questions.
At the end of the session, GSPC MD Shri D. J.
Pandian reiterated the resolve of GSPC to facilitate
all developmental processes of the university.

Three Day Workshop on “CFD Applications
in Energy Sector using ANSWER™ and PORFLOW™”
at SPTG
SPTG organized a three day workshop (March
12-14, 2009) on- “CFD Applications in
Energy Sector using ANSWER™ and PORFLOW™”,
in collaboration with USA based organization
Analytic & Computational Research, Incorporated
(ACRi).
The three day workshop covered fundamentals
of CFD including mathematical and physical basis,
problem definition and modelling in petroleum
sector, and hands on computer sessions. The
work shop had been attended by 10 participants
including Dr. Madhukar M. Rao and Mr. Rajagopal
form ACRi, faculty members from different institutes
including SPTG, SSEG and Nirma Institute of
Technology. Dr. Abhay Sharma, SPTG coordinated
the workshop. The Workshop guided the scholars
to bring out necessary skills in the area of
CFD based applications.
